For those of you who missed last night’s ground-breaking debate at Vancouver City Council on the Hornby Bike Lane<\/strong>, here’s a chance to read and hear what went on. Vancouver City Council unanimously voted for this new separated bike lane<\/strong>, so the Hornby Bike Lane will go ahead! This will ensure that Vancouver has a basic grid of separated bike lanes<\/strong> linking north and south and east and west, as well as separate access via the Burrard Bridge and the Viaduct.<\/p>\n

You can read the Council minutes<\/a>. Even better, you\u00a0can see and hear the debate,\u00a0by\u00a0loading\u00a0it in Windows Media Player<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In particular, I recommend jumping to 2:33:50 to hear\u00a0 Gordon Price’s great speech. Pointing out that the Hornby Bike Lane will join False\u00a0Creek to Coal Harbour, and connect with Dunsmuir, he\u00a0compared\u00a0this\u00a0historic step to\u00a0the completion of Vancouver’s Sea Wall in the 1970’s around Stanley Park.<\/p>\n

Price argued that there “are times in the history of a city when networks begin to fill in and connections are made … when the infrastructure gets to a point where things just go click.” As he put it, this is one of those:<\/p>\n

“Click moments\u00a0\u2013 magical moments\u00a0\u2013\u00a0This is powerful stuff, it changes how people perceive space, how they move\u00a0\u2013 and even the identity of the city.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
