This will be the first time since 1996 that the conference has been held outside of Europe. Despite yet more disengenuous protestations from Suzan Anton, the reality is that conferences are an important part of Vancouver\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10909\" Vancouver, points out:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Not only will Velo-City generate business for the local tourism industry, it reinforces Vancouver\u2019s reputation as a clean and green travel destination with exceptional offerings for cyclists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It will also be a huge shot in the arm for the Vancouver cycling scene. According to Mayor Gregor Robertson, the Velo-city Global 2012 conference will bring around 1,000 cycling specialists to the city, to talk about the rapidly growing role of cycling in urban transportation \u2013 and to see the progress Vancouver has made in <a href=\"..\/?p=105\" target=\"_blank\">developing Vancouver cycling infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I am already scheming about how to get to the conference and learn from this assembly of cycling experts!<\/p>\n<h3>Toronto\u2019s Bixi Program is a GO!<\/h3>\n<p>Toronto cycling is set to make a huge leap forward. Toronto has been hoping to launch its bike sharing Bixi program in May 2011 (and I\u2019ve been hoping they will succeed, as this will give me an excuse to visit Toronto \u2013 a city that I really love).<\/p>\n<p>Chances are looking good, as the City of Toronto has just reached its goal of 1,000 subscribers. Interestingly, this was made possible by the car sharing company, <a href=\"http:\/\/autoshare.com\/discounts\/web.html\" target=\"_blank\">AutoShare<\/a>, which just bought 100 annual memberships (and also by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingdirect.ca\/en\/landingpage\/jumppage\/?sid=275188;&amp;pid=18344195;&amp;aid=123415770;&amp;cid=0&amp;gclid=COma0uPl4KQCFQICbAodVhV4Iw\" target=\"_blank\">ING Direct<\/a>, which provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in sponsorship). Bixi Toronto will be run by Public Bike System Company; and will be modelled on the successful <a href=\"..\/?p=392\" target=\"_blank\">Bixi system used in Montr\u00e9al<\/a>.
