So we continue to pay billions of dollars to support the car culture for drivers who refuse to pay user fees, but subsidizing a user-pay bike share program is a waste of taxpayer money! That is true for anyone who wants to take a long recreational ride. What she fails to appreciate is that a bike share program is not designed to serve recreational riders, but to add to the reach of our public transportation network. New York’s leaders observed the success of bike share programs in other cities and commenced their own bike share program in 2013. New York’s Citi Bike bike share system is now planning its second expansion since 2013. However, transit cannot reach every corner of every neighborhood. Bike Share programs such as New York’s Citi Bikes were developed to cover the gaps in the transit system – and also to reduce emissions, road wear, collisions, congestion, and to improve public health. If big cities like Montreal and New York have done the research and created these systems, why would Vancouver not follow suit?

<img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="16880" data-permalink="https://averagejoecyclist.com/bike-share-transport/why-not-take-a-bike-melbourne-bike-share1/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/averagejoecyclist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Why-not-take-a-bike-Melbourne-Bike-share1.jpg?fit=750%2C583&ssl=1" data-orig-size="750,583" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Why-not-take-a-bike-Melbourne Bike share(1)" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Explore cities on a bike!</p>
" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/averagejoecyclist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Why-not-take-a-bike-Melbourne-Bike-share1.jpg?fit=300%2C233&ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/averagejoecyclist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Why-not-take-a-bike-Melbourne-Bike-share1.jpg?fit=750%2C583&ssl=1" class="wp-image-16880 size-full lazyload" src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" data-src="https://averagejoecyclist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Why-not-take-a-bike-Melbourne-Bike-share1.jpg" alt="This sign we saw at Melbourne bike share stations epitomizes the whole point of bike share -
