In fact, when we\u2019re not on our bikes, <strong>we spend money exactly like regular people<\/strong>. Maggie and I even bought a Fiat 500 (<a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/?p=3591\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>) and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B009NN57JY\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B009NN57JY&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=avejoecyc0e-20&amp;linkId=52KAI6DS632L6Y4I\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Thule Helium bike rack<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/thule-helium-bike-rack-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed here<\/a>) to transport our bikes! As we know, the Arizona legislature recently saw fit to pass a law that <strong>allows businesses to discriminate against gay people<\/strong>. The law entitles service providers to use religious beliefs as a defense in a discrimination lawsuit. (Yes, really.)<\/p>\n<p>The realization that gays spend billions of dollars in Arizona each year AMAZED many legislators, such as Carol Foyler, a Tea Party Republican who supported the law. Foyler actually went on record saying that the startling bombshell that gays play a role in the state\u2019s economy put her and her fellow lawmakers in a tight spot. and could hardly be <strong>expected to know<\/strong>, as they don\u2019t personally know any cyclists (presumably they do not get out much). However, they really SHOULD have known that there is no shortage of parking in downtown Vancouver &#8211; in fact, as I show in this post, there is an almost embarrassing over-abundance on parking in Vancouver (<a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/vancouver-bike-routes-parking-hornby-street\/\"><strong>No Lack of Parking in Vancouver, so Why Are Businesses Complaining?<\/strong><\/a>). the separated bike lane notwithstanding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fortunately, the situation is being addressed by organizations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bikehub.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>HUB<\/strong><\/a> Vancouver, which do reach-outs to business (cyclists telling business what we do with our money, i.e., we spend it). Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson continues to lead the way to improve cycling infrastucture in Vancouver, as <a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/gregor-robertson-safe-bike-routes-vancouver\/\">reported here (<strong>Visionary Mayor of Vancouver Fights for Safe Bike Routes<\/strong><\/a>). And this report out of Victoria will do a lot to educate, hopefully.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"http:\/\/gvcc.bc.ca\/advocacy\/bikes-mean-business\/\" href=\"http:\/\/gvcc.bc.ca\/advocacy\/bikes-mean-business\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bikes Mean Business Report<\/strong><\/a> points out that a number of recent studies have highlighted the local economic benefits of active transportation (cycling and walking), including: higher property values, increased consumer activity and more cycling-related retail opportunities. The GVCC conducted transportation surveys of downtown businesses and consumers in the fall of 2013. They found that Victoria is falling sadly behind in terms of providing cycling infrastructure. The beautiful city has potential to be a great cycling city, but it has a long, long way to go. (Still, the longest journeys begin with a single spin of the pedals.) In the meantime, at least Victoria residents can head out on the <a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/vancouver-cycling-galloping-goose-trail\/\">Galloping Goose Trail, one of the greatest bike
