The idea was to show the ludicrousness of anti-bike rhetoric by replacing &#8220;bike&#8221; with &#8220;car.&#8221; For example:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our sensible ancestors rightly feared the presence of cars in cities. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ReplaceBikewithCar?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ReplaceBikewithCar<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TUnl2k3WM4\">https:\/\/t.co\/TUnl2k3WM4<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AvrgeJoeCyclist?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AvrgeJoeCyclist<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; BicycleUrbanist (@bicycleurbanist) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bicycleurbanist\/status\/681943135539232768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrooklynSpoke\/status\/466593366281449472<\/p>\n<p>This campaign highlighted the craziness of some of the anti-cycling statements. But what most people don&#8217;t realize is that just over a hundred years ago,<strong><strong> most road-users hated motorists just as much as many motorists today hate cyclists. <\/strong><\/strong>A century ago,<strong><strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bikes WERE in fact replaced by cars<\/span> <\/strong><\/strong>in the frightened, angry rhetoric of most road users.<strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, really &#8211; not so long ago, <strong>almost all sensible people were afraid of cars<\/strong>. As late as 1907 they still were seen as irrelevant<strong>, annoying, noisy, smelly nuisances<\/strong>. (Amazing how much this sounds like what is happening today with bikes.) (That&#8217;s <strong>14 devastated families every.single.day<\/strong>, because a loved one has been violently smashed to death by a motor car.) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pedbikeinfo.org\/data\/factsheet_crash.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">2014 stats<\/a>) And let&#8217;s not forget that if you are under the age of 29 and reside on the North American continent, the most likely thing to kill you is <strong>not<\/strong> illness or terrorism or drugs or a crazed shooter &#8211; no, the most likely thing to kill you is something that advertising has been teaching you to love and revere your entire life &#8230; <strong>cars<\/strong>. Here, two of my kids push their bikes along a narrow, rutted sidewalk &#8211; sadly, this is a part of Metro Vancouver&#8217;s much vaunted &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/central-valley-greenway-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Central Valley Greenway<\/a>&#8221; &#8230; it&#8217;s looked like this since the route opened six years ago, and apparently, it is deemed good enough for cyclists, and suitable for &#8220;all ages and abilities&#8221;!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As we know, people did eventually accept motor cars. However, it did not happen overnight \u2013 in fact, it would take DECADES before cars were accepted and adopted in large numbers. I am optimistic that people will be a little quicker to accept the positive changes associated with increased cycling, especially given\u00a0 the increasingly irrefutable proof of global warming, constantly rising obesity and &#8220;lifestyle&#8221; Expecting the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/benefits-separated-bike-lanes\/\">new separated bike lanes<\/a> of Vancouver to immediately resemble the crowded bike lanes of Montreal or Copenhagen does not take into account that people take time to embrace change. Despite the fact that<a href=\"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/benefits-separated-bike-lanes\/\"> research clearly shows the immense value of separated bike lanes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Cycling: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Not so long ago, adults on bikes might be laughed at, pitied or simply ignored. Now there are many more of us, and motorists have stopped ignoring us &#8211; and stopped laughing. Cyclists are now at the stage of being <strong>fought with<\/strong>, but <strong>inevitably, we will win<\/strong>. Our city planners are well aware that cities such as Vancouver cannot be sustainable in the future unless viable alternatives to cars are embraced. <strong>Be it ever so glacial, change is nonetheless
