{"id":984,"date":"2010-10-05T21:13:18","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T04:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/?p=984"},"modified":"2015-04-06T11:26:16","modified_gmt":"2015-04-06T18:26:16","slug":"one-deranged-person-on-a-bike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/averagejoecyclist.com\/one-deranged-person-on-a-bike\/","title":{"rendered":"One Deranged Person on a Bicycle does NOT Represent All of Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0now\u00a011.00 p.m. on 5th October, and Vancouver City Council is <strong>still<\/strong> debating what <strong>should<\/strong> be a no-brainer \u2013 giving Vancouver cyclists <strong>ONE<\/strong> SAFE NORTH-SOUTH BIKE LANE. The <em>Vancouver Sun<\/em> seems to think it will be decided tonight, and that the right decision will be made;\u00a0although some think the plan may be amended to appease all the nay-sayers (those earnest citizens who would rather leave cyclists\u2019 lives in danger, than lose a few parking spots).<\/p>\n<p>In any event, on this day Jeff Lee has posted a story about his run-in with what he calls a \u201ccyclist.\u201d An apparently deranged person on a bicycle (with a gas motor) behaved in an utterly despicable way towards Jeff, and even spat on his wife, while they were in their car on Kingsway. When Jeff went after the man, he threatened Jeff with his bicycle. This must have been a truly horrible experience, and both Jeff and his wife have my sincere sympathies.<\/p>\n<p>However, it does NOT follow from this incident that my life should continue to be in danger when I cycle in downtown Vancouver; nor should my wife\u2019s life be in danger there; nor should my children\u2019s lives be in danger; nor should <strong>your<\/strong> life be in danger on Hornby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This was one deranged individual who happened to be on a kind of bicycle \u2013 his behaviour does <strong>not<\/strong> represent my behaviour, or <strong>your behaviour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there is no shortage of commentators on <a href=\"http:\/\/communities.canada.com\/VANCOUVERSUN\/blogs\/civiclee\/archive\/2010\/10\/05\/idiots-who-give-well-meaning-cyclists-a-bad-name.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff\u2019s &#8220;Civic Lee Speaking&#8221; blog<\/a> extrapolating from this lone deranged person to <strong>all<\/strong> cyclists.
